Imaginé en 1829, le musée des Beaux-Arts n'est inauguré qu'en 1841, dans l'ancien palais de justice de la ville. Des collections d'histoire naturelle y côtoient rapidement des maquettes de bateaux et des objets extra-européens rapportés par les capitaines au long cours à la demande de leur maire. Les dépôts successifs de l’État et les saisies révolutionnaires d’œuvres, pour la plupart du XVIIe siècle, provenant de l'abbaye Saint-Winoc de Bergues, contribuent largement à l'enrichissement des collections vers l'Europe septentrionale et les écoles du Nord. Bombardé en mai-juin 1940, le musée est reconstruit et inauguré en 1973 selon les modèles architecturaux de cette époque. Il est fermé depuis le 1er avril 2015.
