Le musée de Chartres créé en 1833 autour d’une collection d’histoire naturelle et de numismatique n’a eu de cesse d’enrichir ses collections par de nombreux dons et legs de généreux mécènes. Citons pour les principaux : 1847 : de Villiers ; 1852 Vintant ; 1863 l’abbé Calluet ; 1865 Layé ; 1867 Prévôtaux ; 1899 Courtois ; 1901 Ballay ; de 1904 à 1912 Maugin ; 1933 Béthouart ; 1945 Coiffier ; 1947 SAEL ; 1948 de Cossé ; 1970 Bouge ; 1970-71 Navarre ; 1978/95 Vlaminck ; 2010 Loire. Ces dons furent complétés au cours des ans par des dépôts principalement de l’État et par quelques achats d’opportunité sans réelle politique d’acquisition. Il en résulte une grande hétérogénéité des collections, comparable à de nombreux musées de province. A la fin des années 1960, Les collections d’Histoire Naturelle furent déplacées dans le Muséum nouvellement créé et réintégrées au musée des Beaux-Arts à sa fermeture en 2015.
