En 1845, la société des Arts et Sciences offre à la ville de Carcassonne un ensemble de 102 tableaux pour son musée. A l'origine de cette société, une Commission des Arts et Sciences avait été fondée en 1836, avec pour but « de rechercher, de conserver avec soin et de classer, dans un dépôt public, tout ce qui appartient aux antiquités et à l'histoire du pays ». Par la suite, outre les dépôts du musée du Louvre et de l’État, les dons de généreux Carcassonnais poursuivent l'enrichissement des collections. Depuis 1985, grâce à l'intérêt de la Ville pour son musée et au soutien du Fond régional d'Acquisition des musées (FRAM), de nouvelles œuvres complètent cet ensemble.
