Vers 1964, Annick Reveillière, descendante d'une famille intéressée par les arts et les sciences, décide de faire don à la ville de la collection archéologique de son grand-père, Jules Revellière, à condition que celle-ci soit visible par le public. Un petit groupe de blinois, tous passionnés par l'histoire et le riche passé gallo-romain de la ville décide de créer une équipe afin de mener à bien le projet. A ses débuts, le musée se résume à une salle, concédée par la municipalité, au premier étage de l'ancienne mairie. Au fil du temps, le nombre de salles augmente et les collections archéologiques sont complétées par une collection sur les arts et traditions populaires, grâce à de nombreux dons. En 1970, sept salles sont ouvertes au public. Le musée est officiellement inauguré en 1985.
