De 1856 à 1868, des fouilles sont organisées l’hiver pour occuper les indigents. Elles conduisent à l’ouverture d’un premier musée, installé dans une salle de la Mairie. En 1988, la Mairie décide de créer un véritable musée, installé dans une ancienne grange réhabilitée. La gestion scientifique est alors confiée à un conservateur du Musée dauphinois, dans le cadre du réseau des Musées Associés. En 1997, d’importants travaux d’agrandissement du musée sont réalisés et portent la surface d’exposition à 650 m² (permanente et temporaire). Ce nouveau bâtiment est inauguré en septembre 2000. Le musée gallo-romain s'organise autours de deux bâtiments réunis par une galerie couverte. Alors que le premier espace est consacré à l'accueil du public ainsi qu'aux réserves, le second est totalement dévolu à l'exposition permanente. Il offre un seul et vaste volume spacieux disposé autour d'un patio vitré qui n'est pas sans évoquer l'atrium d'une villa romaine.
