C'est pour abriter la collection des princes de Salm, constituée au cours du XVIIIe siècle, que le musée départemental est créé à Épinal en session du Conseil général le 4 septembre 1822. En 1829, le duc de Choiseul, président du Conseil général des Vosges, offre au musée dont il est le véritable fondateur, vingt-cinq tableaux de valeur. A partir de 1975, une audacieuse politique d'acquisitions d’œuvres importantes de la seconde moitié du XXe siècle permet d'offrir aux visiteurs un panorama, rarement vu en dehors des très grandes villes, des principales tendances qui parcourent l'art de notre époque, hormis la peinture. Grâce à l'important dépôt de la Fondation Camille, une attention particulière a pu être accordée aux artistes femmes.
