En 1845, la société d'archéologie du Finistère est créée avec un début de constitution des collections (archéologie préhistorique et gallo-romaine, statuaire urbaine médiévale). En 1862, les collections de la société deviennent musée départemental d'archéologie. En 1874, le musée des costumes bretons est créé : 1884, diorama : "sortie de noce en Bretagne", 1899 diorama des anciens meubles bretons. Le transfert des collections dans l'ancien palais épiscopal a lieu en 1911. En 1955 le dépôt diocésain (statuaire) complète le fonds. En 1958 les salles de la céramique et du costume (R. Y. Creston) sont ouvertes. En1981 un conservateur départemental est nommé et l'on assiste au début des travaux de rénovation. En 1991 et 1992, les collections de costumes et d'archéologie sont réinstallées. 2008, refonte du contenu des salles d’exposition permanente des costumes du Finistère, et enrichissement des présentations.
