Le musée est fondé en 1913 par MM. Ginet-Donaty et Derost. Il est enrichi d'abord par des dons locaux puis, de 1949 aux années 1960, par Me Charles Damiron, avocat en retraite, ancien bâtonnier au Barreau de Lyon, devenu Président des Amis des Arts de Marcigny et la Région, ainsi que par ses fils et ses amis lyonnais : majoliques italiennes, faïences de Delft, de Rouen, Nevers, Moustiers, Marseille, Lyon... terres vernissées d'Apt, le Castellet, Savignies-en-Beauvaisis, Pré-d'Auge... Statues religieuses, de bois et de pierre ; vitrail Renaissance, mobilier, textiles. C'est aussi un musée d'histoire locale : outils de l'Homme de Néanderthal découverts en 1989 à Marcigny, collection provenant des villages le long de la Loire (moustérien, néolithique), entrevue secrète de Richelieu et le général Fabert au prieuré bénédictin (complot de Cinq-Mars et complices), vie du Général Perrin de Précy (défenseur de Lyon en 1793), vie de Philibert Fressinet, baron et général d'Empire, vie et œuvre du sculpteur Etienne Captier (1840-1902), vie d'Irène Popard (danse gymnique).
