Sign inCréé en 1983 à l'initiative de l'association des Amis du musée. Le 12 août 1985, le musée de la Résistance et de la déportation ouvre ses portes pour la première fois au public. Une équipe de bénévoles assure l’accueil des visiteurs. L’inauguration officielle a lieu le 18 octobre 1986 en présence de membres du gouvernement de l’époque. Associatif, le musée évolue rapidement vers un statut municipal et obtient également le soutien du Conseil général. En 1990, transfert de gestion du musée à la commune de Nantua. En 2004, départementalisation du musée.
