L’origine des collections du musée d’Art champenois du XVIe siècle est la même que celle du musée des Beaux-Arts et d’Archéologie. La Société Académique de l’Aube fonde le musée de Troyes en 1831, dans les locaux de l’ancienne abbaye Saint-Loup. Elle y réunit d’abord les œuvres d’art provenant des saisies révolutionnaires puis celles, très nombreuses, qui ont été données ou léguées au musée et enfin les nouvelles acquisitions. Ces collections sont cédées à la Ville en 1945. L’importance des collections nécessite de les répartir dans deux bâtiments. C’est ainsi que l’hôtel de Vauluisant accueille, en 1949, les collections consacrées à l’art du XVIe siècle avec des peintures et des sculptures remarquables qui permettent d’avoir une vision de l’extraordinaire floraison de l’art religieux à Troyes et en Champagne à cette époque.
