Edifié à partir de 1913, Couriot est devenu dans les années 1940 le plus grand puits d'extraction de charbon du bassin minier. Il est visible aujourd'hui tel qu'il l'était lors de sa fermeture en 1973. Placé en lisière de la ville en bordure du chemin de fer par lequel était expédié le charbon, il domine Saint-Étienne avec ses deux crassiers, qui rappellent le rôle majeur de la houille dans l'aventure industrielle du bassin. Il ouvre au public en 1991.
