Dès le lendemain des combats, la Maison de la Dernière Cartouche devient un musée qui présente la bataille et les souvenirs des combattants français et bavarois, mais aussi les souffrances du village et de ses habitants. Les Bazeillais payèrent en effet un lourd tribut à cette guerre de 1870. Les Troupes de marine qui se battirent à Bazeilles ont livré un combat particulièrement acharné, devenu emblématique de leur vaillance et de leur volonté de remplir jusqu’au sacrifice suprême la mission qui leur avait été confiée. En deux jours de combats acharnés, ce sont 2.655 « marsouins » et « bigors » et près de 5.000 soldats bavarois qui tombèrent à Bazeilles.
