Salins-les-Bains doit sa renommée et son pouvoir, dès le Moyen Âge, au sel que l'on y exploite et dont on fait commerce. Après 1.200 ans d’exploitation, l'évolution des techniques et l’arrivée de la conservation des aliments par le froid ont raison de la Grande Saline qui ferme ses portes en 1962. Depuis 1966, la Saline est propriété de la ville de Salins, qui l’a ouverte à la visite. La collection du musée de la Grande Saline est issue de la fusion, en 2016, de deux ensembles, le musée du sel, composé en majeure partie d’objets techniques en lien avec la fabrication du sel, et le fonds Max Claudet, qui regroupe les productions artistiques de la ville de Salins depuis le Moyen Âge jusqu’au XXe siècle (sculptures, peintures, art religieux, faïences, arts graphiques, etc.).
