Depuis 1957, le musée de la Grande-Chartreuse a pour mission de témoigner de la vie des chartreux. En effet s’ils sont retirés au fond du vallon pour y trouver solitude et silence nécessaires à leur contemplation, ils ne peuvent ouvrir le monastère au public. C’est la raison d’être du musée organisé dans l’ancienne maison des frères, véritable petit monastère jusqu’au XVIIe siècle. Pour subvenir aux besoins de l'Ordre, les Chartreux ont été tour à tour, éleveurs, imprimeurs, enlumineurs, maîtres de forge, herboristes, pharmaciens, et enfin depuis le XVIIe siècle, distillateurs et liquoristes. Le Musée retrace l'histoire du mystère de la fameuse liqueur de Chartreuse, mais pour les amateurs, il est conseillé de se rendre également sur le site de production de la liqueur à Voiron (à 30 km).
