Le musée de la Figurine historique de Compiègne naît de deux principaux legs à la Ville : celui d’Arthur de Marsy en 1901, composé de soldats en bois polychromes réalisés par Jean-Baptiste Clémence à la fin du XVIIIe siècle, et celui d’Alfred Ternisien en 1927, comprenant plusieurs milliers de figurines représentant les armées de l’Histoire. Près de 30.000 figurines sont ainsi rassemblées à l’hôtel de ville. Une exposition, organisée en 1948 à Compiègne par la Société des collectionneurs de figurines historiques, encourage la création d’un musée permanent. Celui-ci s’étoffe alors de dons provenant des acteurs majeurs de la figurine historique de l’époque. En 1977, la Ville décide de transférer le musée dans l’ancien Hôtel de la Cloche, attenant à l’hôtel de ville, et en confie la restructuration à l’abbé Robert Ducoin. Inauguré en 1984, il devient le premier musée d’importance dévolu au monde de la figurine historique. Le musée bénéficie d'achats considérables de la ville de Compiègne de 1986 à 1992. Le musée possède près de 155.000 pièces dont environ 45.000 sont actuellement exposées.
