Moustiers réunissait toutes les conditions pour devenir un centre faïencier : l'eau, première source d'énergie, servait à faire fonctionner les moulins (tanneries, papeteries, moulin à vernis...). L'argile était extraite de carrières non loin du village. Le bois, nécessaire à l'alimentation des fours de cuisson, abondait dans les forêts alentours. Le musée de la Faïence est inauguré le 15 septembre 1929, sous l'impulsion de Marcel Provence et de l'académie de Moustiers. En 1927, il ne reste plus aucun atelier de faïence en activité. La guerre de 1870, ainsi que la concurrence industrielle, ont mis à mal cet art traditionnel. Marcel Provence en personne rallume les fours pour relancer l'activité, entouré de céramistes confirmés et de maîtres-faïenciers.
