« C’est un beau couteau … mais c’est un Nogent ! » s’exclame le personnage de Roubaut dans le film « La bête humaine » de Jean Renoir (1938). C’est dire si la ville de Nogent – l’appellation Nogent-en-Bassigny n’est plus usitée depuis 1972 – a acquis une solide renommée puisque son seul nom suffit à identifier une coutellerie de qualité ; raffinement et diversité caractérisent cette coutellerie mondialement réputée, sollicitée par les plus grandes maisons d’orfèvrerie françaises (Christofle, Hermès, Ercuis, Puiforcat, etc.). Créé pour mettre à l’honneur un patrimoine identitaire, le musée de la coutellerie présente, dans un cadre moderne, l’histoire technique et sociale de cette activité traditionnelle, du XVIIIe siècle à nos jours. Ce musée des sciences et techniques valorise également les technologies nouvelles, fruits d’un savoir-faire traditionnel aujourd’hui renouvelé.
