L'idée d'une section d'arts décoratifs modernes pour le musée de Nancy remonte à 1894. En décembre 1900, la ville de Nancy crée un musée d'art décoratif qui doit être dédié à l'art décoratif moderne lorrain. Ce musée est alors installé à l'hôtel de ville, avec le musée de peinture et de sculpture. Des achats sont dès lors effectués auprès des manufactures nancéiennes. En 1935, Eugène Corbin, mécène et collectionneur de l’École de Nancy, décide de faire don de sa collection à la Ville de Nancy. Plus de 750 pièces ont enrichi considérablement ces collections, qui sont alors présentées aux galeries Poirel. En 1952, les collections étant difficilement visibles depuis la Seconde Guerre mondiale, la Ville de Nancy décide d'acheter la propriété d'Eugène Corbin pour y installer le musée de l’École de Nancy. Celui-ci ouvre officiellement ses portes en 1964. Le choix fait par le conservateur, Françoise-Thérèse Charpentier, est de restituer l'atmosphère fin de siècle, en aménageant diverses pièces (salon, bureau, chambre à coucher).
