La famille Viard-Morel acquiert le bâtiment au XIXe siècle et le lègue à la Ville en 1907, à la condition d’en faire un musée. En 1920, le Conseil municipal prend la décision d’installer dans ce bâtiment un musée qui prend le nom de Musée Viard-Morel. Les premières collections se composent d’un ensemble d’objets de la Première Grande mondiale, ainsi que de fossiles et minéraux locaux. Les collections s'étoffent progressivement et prennent un véritable essor à partir de 1973, avec la nomination de Gérard Mourlet, conservateur bénévole. Mais l’institution doit fermer ses portes en 2004, pour cause de vétusté. Un projet ambitieux voit alors le jour, avec la volonté de réunir la médiathèque, le musée et un cyber-espace au sein d’un même ensemble. Ce nouvel équipement culturel doit être largement ouvert au public et offrir les meilleures conditions d’accueil et de travail. Le projet est soutenu par le ministère de la Culture, le Conseil Régional de Champagne Ardenne et le Conseil général de la Marne. Le nouveau musée, qui a obtenu l’appellation « Musée de France », ouvre ses portes en octobre 2011. Il répond à trois missions essentielles : la préservation des collections, leur étude et la médiation auprès du public. Pour pouvoir gérer au mieux les collections patrimoniales, un inventaire a alors été entrepris afin de connaître précisément les richesses du musée et de faciliter le travail scientifique interne ou externe. En parallèle, un programme de restauration a été lancé ainsi que le réaménagement complet des salles d’exposition.
