Riche du legs, en 1905, de Gustave Dutailly comportant quelques 5.000 affiches historiques et forte, depuis 1990, des éditions de la biennale internationale de l’affiche et du graphisme, la collection de la Ville de Chaumont est abritée, depuis novembre 1994, à la Maison du livre et de l'affiche, actuelle médiathèque. Ayant à cœur de se doter d'un équipement culturel dédié au design graphique, la Ville de Chaumont ouvre un nouveau lieu, en 2017, baptisé « le Signe, centre national du graphisme », dont l'un des objectifs est d'assurer la gestion de cette collection.
