Entre le Ier et le IVe siècle de notre ère, Lezoux fut l'un des plus grands centres de production de céramique de l'Empire romain. Sur des dizaines d’hectares, les potiers façonnèrent plusieurs centaines de millions de vase. Parmi les productions, la plus importante et la plus notable est celle de la vaisselle sigillée. Cette céramique, fabriquée durant les cinq premiers siècles de notre ère et commercialisée en masse, témoigne de la diffusion de la romanité à travers toute l’Europe. Installé dans une ancienne fabrique de poterie du XIXe siècle, le musée présente des collections issues principalement du site archéologique de Lezoux, connu depuis le XVIIIe siècle. Au XIXe siècle, les érudits constituent de nombreuses collections, et s’intéressent avant tout à la sigillée. Le Comité archéologique de Lezoux inaugure le premier musée en 1957, puis le musée devient municipal en 1966 avec Hugues Vertet, conservateur (chargé de recherches au CNRS et responsable de la plupart des fouilles effectuées à Lezoux entre 1960 et 1980). Le musée départemental ouvre en 2007 dans les locaux réhabilités de la fabrique Bompard.
