Créé en 1929 à l'initiative de la ville et du peintre Victor Charreton le musée ouvre au public en 1933. En 1949, les collections s'enrichissent d'une donation importante d'armes. L'année 1950 voit l'entrée d'un fonds archéologique suite à des travaux de terrassement dans la ville. Le département textile est créé en 1970. A partir de 1992, une analyse des collections et un réajustement des objectifs et des priorités sont menés, afin d'orienter les collections sur « l'ennoblissement textile ». Le parcours muséographique est rénové en 2000, avec un aménagement d'espaces d'exposition permanent sur trois niveaux, une salle d'exposition temporaire, une salle pédagogique, un centre de documentation et une bibliothèque et des bureaux.
