Créé dans la deuxième partie du XIXe siècle à partir des collections du docteur Thomas, le musée propose une présentation classique de zoologie, paléontologie, géologie, botanique et préhistoire. Les salles du rez-de-chaussée ont été entièrement rénovées en 1999 afin d'accueillir des expositions temporaires et des animations. Un deuxième projet de rénovation est en cours, reprenant les éléments forts du premier, édicté par une commission du Ministère de l'Education Nationale, pour une restructuration et un développement de l'ensemble du site (y compris le jardin). Un travail de fond est mené depuis quelques années concernant notamment les éléments en réserve.
