En 1883, la découverte à Die d'un trésor de monnaies d'or et d'argent du XVIe siècle décide la municipalité à placer une vitrine dans la salle des archives de la mairie. La création d'un musée municipal est décidée par délibération du Conseil municipal en 1895 et est suivie d'effet en 1905, lorsque le maire de Die obtient le don d'une partie des collections de la société française d'archéologie. Le musée s'agrandit en 1949, en s'installant dans un hôtel particulier du XVIIIe siècle, puis en 1967 avec l'achat d'une importante collection d'archéologie locale constituée au XIXe siècle.
