La création d’un musée à Bastia remonte à une initiative de la Société des sciences historiques et naturelles de la Corse en 1898. Au début du XXe siècle, le musée devient municipal. Transféré à la caserne Marbeuf en 1922, il prend alors l’appellation de « musée Corse de Bastia ». Pillé sous l’occupation, il perd alors une grande partie de ses collections et toutes ses archives. En 1952 le musée d’ethnographie corse lui succède et est installé au sein du Palais des gouverneurs génois. Ce nouvel établissement s’intéresse plus particulièrement à l’ethnographie rurale, mais intègre les collections rescapées du précédent et les thématiques abordées sont diverses. Elles ne cessent de croître mais, peu à peu, la présentation vieillit et le musée répond difficilement aux nouvelles exigences du public. Il est donc décidé de le rénover et de l’agrandir en reconstruisant les parties du palais détruites lors de la dernière guerre. En 2004, un nouveau programme scientifique et culturel du musée voit le jour. Il est centré sur l’histoire de la ville.
