1872 : décision par la ville de créer un musée (dans le couvent des Ursulines). 1873 : le département de l'Eure dépose sa collection d'archéologie au musée. 1878 : construction d'un nouveau musée sis sur l'actuelle place De Gaulle. 1881: Inauguration. 1955 : cession du bâtiment de l’Évêché à la ville par le département. 1961 : ouverture du musée (r.d.ch) dans l'évêché. 1972 : ouverture totale du musée. 1985 extension du musée et construction de la salle souterraine. La ville d'Évreux a poursuivi une constante politique d'acquisition dans tous les domaines représentés. Parallèlement, de nombreux legs, dons et dépôts de particuliers ou d'autres institutions contribuent à la diversification des collections. Le musée est également présent dans la création contemporaine. Il développe, depuis les années 1980, une collection d’œuvres du XXe siècle (courants de l'abstraction lyrique, supports-surfaces, etc.).
