En 1835, le musée des Beaux-Arts est créé par la Société d'Agriculture, d'Archéologie et d'Histoire naturelle de la Manche. C'est un musée encyclopédique, à la manière du XIXe siècle. Le musée s’enrichit de dons effectués par les familles aristocratiques manchoises (La Tour du Pin en 1838, Lebrun en 1840). A la fin du XIXe siècle, la municipalité construit un bâtiment nouveau pour le musée. Situé rue Havin, il abrite alors une collection de peinture, de sculpture, d’archéologie, de numismatique et d’histoire naturelle. Le musée est détruit dans les bombardements de juin 1944. Une partie des collections artistiques, évacuées dès 1939, est sauvée. Toutefois, les pertes sont nombreuses. Les collections d’histoire naturelle et de numismatique sont détruites ou volées. En 1958, le musée s’installe provisoirement dans le nouvel hôtel de ville de Saint-Lô. Les donations Octave Feuillet (1950), Jean Follain (1991) et Sergio de Castro (2006) entraînent un développement important du musée. Les collections de paysages XIXe siècle sont constituées grâce au versement de dommages de guerre.
