Le musée est créé dans la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle, mais c'est en 1936 qu'il s'installe dans les locaux actuels et il ne prend son orientation de musée d'histoire locale et d'ethnographie régionale qu'après la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Le Musée d’art et d’histoire est actuellement fermé au public pour des raisons de sécurité. Des travaux de réaménagement de l’accueil, dont l’achèvement était prévu au printemps 2016, ont révélé des problèmes de structure du bâtiment. Un diagnostic approfondi s’impose avant d’envisager sa réouverture au public. Bien que ses collections ne soient pas visibles de manière permanente, le Musée d’art et d’histoire poursuit ses activités : étude des collections et accueil des chercheurs, prêts d’œuvres, expositions hors les murs.
