Le LAAC est né grâce au don à la ville de Dunkerque, d’un ensemble exceptionnel d’œuvres d’artistes du XXe siècle, à l’initiative de Gilbert Delaine, président-fondateur de l’association L’Art contemporain, soutenue par soixante entreprises mécènes dans les années 1970-1980. Aujourd’hui, le LAAC présente annuellement deux expositions temporaires d’envergure, quatre expositions d’arts graphiques, au côté d’une sélection de plus de deux-cents œuvres de la collection, « Les Incontournables », et le jardin de sculptures. Rare musée en France à pouvoir offrir un panorama de l’art des années 1945 à 1980 grâce à sa collection de plus de 2.000 œuvres, le LAAC oriente sa politique culturelle en complémentarité avec les projets développés par le Fonds régional d'art contemporain (FRAC Grand Large-Hauts-de-France). Le programme des expositions s’organise autour des artistes de ce temps. Il s’ouvre à la création contemporaine en commandant ou en présentant des œuvres actuelles qui dialoguent avec les collections et les projets.
