À la fin du XIXe siècle, à l'initiative de plusieurs érudits locaux et collectionneurs, un premier embryon de collection est rassemblé au sein d'une bibliothèque-musée dans l'hôtel de ville. Entre 1952 et 1970, un musée d'archéologie locale est installé dans la chapelle Sainte-Catherine, mise à disposition par le diocèse. Les collections sont issues d'anciennes collections privées et de découvertes archéologiques récentes. Face à l'accroissement rapide des collections, la chapelle devient trop exigüe et la ville opte pour l'installation du musée dans l'ancien presbytère, situé 27 rue de l’amphithéâtre. Ce transfert est l'occasion d'élargir les collections à la présentation d'autres grands sites archéologiques locaux, grâce à des dépôts de l’État, mais également à l'histoire locale. Entre 1972 et 2003, le musée d’histoire et d’archéologie du pays d’Apt accueille le public au sein d'un parcours historique et thématique. A partir de 1985, la prise en compte du riche passé industriel de la ville conduit à la constitution d’une collection d’histoire industrielle et à l'ouverture du musée de l’aventure industrielle en juillet 2003. Rebaptisé musée d'Apt en juin 2017, le musée de l’aventure industrielle comprend des espaces permanents consacrés aux trois principales industries locales (fruits confits, ocres et faïences) et un espace d'exposition temporaire. Le musée d’histoire et d’archéologie est aujourd’hui fermé au public. Une partie des collections archéologiques est à présent accessible au public sur réservation et lors de visites guidées dans l’annexe Apta Julia.
