Fondé en 1820, par le vicomte de Becdelièvre, le musée s'oriente d'emblée vers une pluridisciplinarité de ses collections (peintures, archéologie, sciences naturelles). 1850 : construction dans le jardin du Fer-à-cheval d’un bâtiment conçu pour abriter le musée. 1868 : suite au legs Crozatier, doublement de la surface d’exposition par un nouvel édifice. Le musée du Puy devient le musée Crozatier. 1950 : réaménagement et modernisation du musée après la Seconde Guerre mondiale. 2007 : la Ville décide de lancer le projet de rénovation du musée. L’ambitieux projet est soutenu par l’État et le Conseil régional Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Début du chantier de gros œuvre. 2018 : réouverture du musée.
