En 1977, la ville de Figeac achète pour un franc symbolique la maison natale de Champollion, alors menacée par un arrêté de péril, et décide de la restaurer pour en faire un musée, en hommage au déchiffreur des hiéroglyphes. Le musée Champollion est inauguré en décembre 1986. Il présente une collection d'objets liés à l’Égypte ancienne et plus particulièrement à l'écriture des hiéroglyphes. Après plusieurs années de réflexion et deux ans de travaux d'extension et de restructuration, le nouveau musée Champollion - les écritures du monde, ouvre en 2007. En élargissant ses collections, le musée inscrit l’œuvre de Jean-François Champollion au cœur de l'histoire fabuleuse de l'écriture. Cette aventure sociale, intellectuelle et technique décrypte 5.300 ans de notre histoire, depuis les quatre écritures fondatrices (les cunéiformes, les hiéroglyphes, les caractères chinois et les glyphes mayas), jusqu'à l'écriture en usage de nos jours.
