La volonté de créer un musée au Vigan se manifeste en 1792, durant les travaux effectués par un commerçant désireux d'agrandir son étal : les fondations viennent buter sur les restes de l'ancien prieuré bénédictin. Plusieurs éléments sont remontés à la surface et entassés dans des caisses destinées à être l'embryon d'un futur musée. Toutefois, le projet n'aboutit pas et il faudra attendre 1963 pour qu'un établissement soit inauguré au Vigan avec la volonté de la municipalité et l'aide du Conseil Général : le musée Cévenol. A l'origine, Odette Teissier du Cros, assistante de Georges-Henri Rivière, pionnier de l'ethnologie et fondateur du musée national des Arts et Traditions Populaires. Des parrains prestigieux accompagnent cette fondation tardive : Georges-Henri Rivière bien sûr, Claude Lévi-Strauss, professeur au Collège de France, André Chamson, de l'Académie française, M. Aubanel, gendre du marquis de Baroncelli, représentant la Nacioun Gardiano.
