En 1891, le peintre Léon Bonnat décide de donner à sa ville natale toutes les œuvres d'art qu'il avait acquises. Deux donations importantes viennent ensuite enrichir le fonds du musée : - en 1936, celle d'Antonin Personnaz, photographe, ami et collectionneur avisé des impressionnistes ; - en 1989, celle de Paulette Howard Johnston (peintures, pastels, dessins et gravures de son père Paul Helleu). A ces donations se sont ajoutés les legs Derrecagaix en 1921, Jacques Petithory en 1992 et P. Howard Johnston en 2010.
