1983 : Michèle Tabarot, adjoint à la culture de la ville du Cannet noue les premiers liens avec la famille de l'artiste. 1995 : Michèle Tabarot est élue maire du Cannet. 1998 : acquisition par la ville de l'Hôtel Saint-Vianney pour y créer le musée. 2001 : Exposition Pierre Bonnard sous la lumière du Cannet à l'Espace Bonnard. Suivent chaque année des expositions consacrées à Pierre Bonnard ou son environnement artistique. 2003 : le Conseil municipal approuve le principe de création d'un musée sur le site de l'Hôtel Saint-Vianney. Premières acquisitions de la Ville du Cannet et premiers soutiens. Création d'un Comité scientifique. 2005 : un concours de maîtrise d’œuvre est lancé. 2006 : l'équipe d'architectes est retenue : sont associés à Birgitte Fryland pour la muséographie et Jérôme Mazas, paysagiste. Décembre : Sur proposition du Haut Conseil des musées de France, le musée Bonnard obtient l'appellation Musée de France. Mars 2007 : le jardin de la maison de Bonnard, Le Bosquet est classé au titre des Monuments historiques. Juin 2011 : inauguration du musée Bonnard, premier musée au monde consacré à cet artiste. 2012 : signature d'une convention de partenariat avec les musées nationaux d'Orsay et de l'Orangerie.
