La Société du musée Bernadotte, fondée en 1935, loua la maison natale du futur souverain pour y réunir des documents et souvenirs. Négligées pendant la guerre, la maison et les collections furent acquises en 1949 par la Ville, aidée par la famille royale de Suède, qui consentit un don important. Le musée, entièrement rénové et enrichi grâce à l'acitvité et à la générosité de M. Gunnar W. Lundberg, attaché culturel auprès de l'ambassade de Suède, fut inauguré le 21 juillet 1951. Parmi les donateurs, on relève les noms de L.L. MM. Oscar I, Oscar II et Gustave VI-Adolphe de Suède.
