Création du musée par arrêté municipal en 1922, ouverture au public en 1924 et inauguration en 1934. 1994 : Travaux d’aménagement des deux ailes du Château-Neuf. Juin 1997 : Fin des travaux à Château-Neuf et début du transfert des collections sur ce site. Juin 1998 : Ouverture des salles d’expositions temporaires à Château-Neuf. Juin 2001 : Réouverture du Musée Basque et de l’histoire de Bayonne à la maison Dagourette avec une muséographie renouvelée. 2007 : Gestion du Musée confiée à un Syndicat mixte regroupant le Conseil général des Pyrénées-Atlantiques (aujourd'hui Conseil départemental), la CABAB (aujourd’hui Communauté d’Agglomération Pays Basque) et la Ville de Bayonne qui reste propriétaire des bâtiments et des collections et qui exerce la tutelle administrative. Trois sections : - ethnographie du pays basque avec reconstitution d'intérieurs et échoppes basques ; - la sorcellerie et l'expansion basque sont illustrées par des artistes ; - la salle de pelote basque est inaugurée en 1957. En décembre 1992, la Ville de Bayonne lance le concours de recrutement d’architectes muséographes. En juillet 1993, Bernard Althabegoïty et Zette Cazalas sont choisis.
