Un projet de création d'un musée à Clermont-Ferrand est étudié dès 1822 mais ce n'est qu'en 1842 que les premières collections sont rassemblées sous l’autorité de Jean-Baptiste Bouillet (1799-1878), qui est nommé conservateur. En 1860, ce fonds est installé dans l'ancien hôpital des Charitains et ouvert au public. Le premier catalogue publié par J.-B. Bouillet en 1861 compte 824 numéros parmi lesquels le matériel archéologique occupe une place déjà considérable. Inauguré en octobre 1903, le musée Bargoin abrite les collections d’art et d’archéologie de la Ville de Clermont-Ferrand jusqu’en 1992. Les collections locales (hors archéologie) sont, quant à elles, exposées depuis 1922-1923 à l’hôtel Fontfreyde, réaménagé en musée d’histoire et d’art local (appelé aussi musée du Ranquet). La construction du musée des Beaux-Arts (musée d’art Roger-Quilliot) à Montferrand et le transfert des collections concernées laissent libre l’espace du 1er et 2e étages pour accueillir le musée du Tapis d’Art et conserver les collections d’archéologie au rez-de-chaussée et à l’entresol. Depuis 2006, ces deux fonds (archéologie et tapis/arts textiles) sont réunis en une seule et même entité : le musée Bargoin, et ses deux départements.
