L'appartement dans lequel décède Barbey d'Aurevilly, rue Rousselet, à Paris, est conservé en l'état, grâce à la vigilance de Louise Read, secrétaire de Barbey dans les dix dernières années de la vie de l'écrivain. Au début des années 1920, le propriétaire souhaitant reprendre la jouissance de son appartement, Louise Read propose au maire de Saint-Sauveur-Le-Vicomte de donner l'ensemble des objets et documents de l'appartement parisien de Barbey. Le musée est créé en 1925, au château de Saint-Sauveur-Le-Vicomte. En 1944, ce premier musée est malmené par les bombardements. Malgré des pertes importantes, le musée peut être reconstitué dans une autre partie du château, en 1956. La municipalité de Saint-Sauveur acquiert la maison familiale de Barbey, rue Bottin Desylles. Le nouveau musée est inauguré en 1989. Les collections occupent le premier étage et la bibliothèque municipale le rez-de-chaussée. Les collections sont considérablement enrichies grâce à la volonté de la municipalité, avec l'aide de l’État, de la Région, et de la société des amis de Barbey. A l'occasion du bicentenaire de la naissance de Barbey, le Département a mobilisé des fonds importants pour aménager une exposition permanente, au rez-de-chaussée du musée, la maison familiale étant désormais entièrement consacrée à Barbey.
