Les collections du musée Balzac représentent environ 2.300 pièces (sculptures, peintures, imprimés, manuscrits, estampes, dessins, photographies, matériel d'imprimerie, mobilier). Ces collections ont été principalement constituées grâce aux six donations de la famille Métadier et de Bernard-Paul Métadier au Conseil général d’Indre-et-Loire. Ces donations sont réalisées de 1958 à 2011 : elles représentent environ 1.400 pièces (mobilier, peintures, sculptures, estampes, ouvrages…), soit 60% des collections actuelles du musée Balzac. Les collections sont également enrichies par plusieurs grandes acquisitions du Conseil général d’Indre-et-Loire de 1981 à 2006. Enfin, une centaine de pièces sont des dépôts de différentes institutions : musée des beaux-arts de Tours, archives départementales d’Indre-et-Loire, Mobilier national, musée Rodin, musée d’Orsay, Société Honoré de Balzac de Touraine.
