Les fragments lapidaires provenant de travaux de démolition, recueillis et mis à l'abri dès 1815 sur l'initiative du maire et d'un groupe d'érudits locaux, fondateurs de la Société d'Archéologie, sont réunis en 1931 dans le bâtiment actuel, réorganisé après la guerre 39-45. Le musée archéologique de Saintes a fait l’objet d’une refonte et d’une renouvellement de son exposition permanente. En 2018, la collection lapidaire est déposée et mise en réserve. Actuellement, le musée archéologique présente une exposition permanente consacrée à la vie quotidienne à Saintes, entre le Ier et le IIIe siècles de notre ère. Elle est composée d'objets archéologiques issus des fouilles réalisées à Saintes au XXe siècle.
