C'est lors du congrès de la Société française d'archéologie réuni à Fréjus en 1882, que le dépôt archéologique (patiemment constitué par les soins de J.-A. Aubenas, féru d'antiquités) prend le nom de musée. A l'étroit dans la salle de l'ancienne mairie, le musée est installé dès 1912 dans la salle de l'Officialité du Palais épiscopal. Le fonds des collections, modeste à ses débuts, s'enrichit grâce aux fouilles méthodiques du docteur Donnadieu de 1930 à 1939. Après 1945, les collections sont réorganisées et enrichies de fouilles plus récentes et d'acquisitions (collection Pelloux-Gervais du Clos de la Tour) et transférées dans les salles du Vieux Fréjus près de la Cathédrale.
