Le musée municipal est constitué en 1876 pour « moraliser par l'instruction, charmer par les arts et enrichir par les sciences ». En 1879, Alfred Canel lègue sa maison avec l'intégralité de sa collection, ainsi que des rentes, à la ville de Pont-Audemer. Dès 1834, il a été à l'initiative de la création de la bibliothèque municipale. En 1884, sa maison ouvre ses portes pour accueillir la bibliothèque municipale et le musée cantonal. L'espace reste aujourd'hui partagé entre le fonds ancien de la bibliothèque et le musée.
