En 1859 est créé à Bagnols-sur-Cèze le premier musée cantonal de France. Fondé par l’érudit bagnolais Léon Alègre, la « bibliothèque-musée » se présente comme un vaste cabinet de curiosités à vocation encyclopédique articulé autour de plusieurs salles : histoire naturelle, agriculture, industrie, antiquités et curiosités, arts décoratifs, beaux-arts. Dès 1917, le peintre Albert André, nommé conservateur, fait du musée un lieu consacré à la peinture moderne figurative. Albert André et ses successeurs constituent un fonds de peintures figuratives modernes et contemporaines. Au moins 200 œuvres datant de la première moitié du XXe siècle entrent dans les collections avant la mort d'Albert André, en 1954, majoritairement par dons. Son successeur, Jacqueline George-Besson, enrichit largement la collection : près de 300 peintures et dessins (donation de la collection de peinture lyonnaise en 1961, dons des artistes…). Le dépôt effectué par l’Etat, d’une partie de la collection du critique d’art George Besson en 1965 et en 1972, vient ajouter à la collection du musée 87 œuvres, dont de nombreuses toiles de maîtres. En 2000, Jacqueline George-Besson fait une donation de 144 peintures et dessins d’Albert André, offrant au musée de Bagnols-sur-Cèze le fonds le plus important existant sur cet artiste.
