Dans la grotte de l'Hortus, en face du Pic Saint-Loup, sont découverts les restes de la mâchoire du plus vieil Héraultais connu, un homme de Néanderthal qui vécut il y a 30.000 ans environ. Créé en 1951, le musée des Matelles est devenu le premier musée de préhistoire de l'Hérault. Rénové en 1985, il présente la vie quotidienne des hommes du paléolithique et du néolithique d'une manière très pédagogique et met en lumière des objets tout à fait exceptionnels. La Communauté de communes a récemment décidé d'en faire un musée intercommunal sous le nom de musée du Pic Saint-Loup, et de l'ouvrir à l'histoire du secteur, faite de vagues successives de populations venues peupler ce territoire, couvrant ainsi des époques beaucoup plus récentes.
