Ayant fait entrer, entre 1955 et 2021, près de 3000 œuvres dans sa collection personnelle, Cérès Franco en présente un peu plus de la moitié à partir de 1995, dans deux maisons privées du village médiéval de Lagrasse. Présentée à partir de la fin des années 1980 dans divers lieux d’expositions, la collection fait l’objet d’une première tentative de don au musée des Beaux-Arts de Carcassonne en 2014. En 2015, la collection prend possession de l’ancienne coopérative viticole du village de Montolieu, et se constitue sous la forme d’un musée associatif. Constitué en Groupement d’Intérêt Public à compter de 2019, le musée reçoit définitivement en propriété publique la collection de Cérès Franco, puis l’ensemble de ses archives et l’appellation Musée de France en 2025.
