Les collections d'art décoratif, d'archéologie et d'histoire de la ville d'Orléans séjournaient depuis 1826 au musée des Beaux-Arts, dans l'ancien hôtel des Créneaux. Elles sont transférées en 1862 dans l'hôtel Cabu. Elles doivent beaucoup aux travaux de la Société archéologique de l'Orléanais tout au long du XIXe siècle. De très nombreux dons, legs, achats enrichissent jusqu'en 1940 le musée, qui figure jusqu'à cette date parmi les plus importants musées historiques et archéologiques français. En 1940, les collections sont brûlées.
