Le projet de l'Ecomusée a vu le jour en juin 1979. En mars 1980, ouverture de l'atelier « Poupées » pour la préparation d'une exposition sur les costumes qui se déroule dans la salle des marronniers. En 1981, Assemblée générale constitutive de « l'Association culturelle de l'Ecomusée du Pays de Montfort ». En janvier 1982 naît « l'Association culturelle de l'Ecomusée du Pays de Montfort » de la fusion des « Amis de Montfort » et du « Centre de Recherche Traditionnelle ». Inauguration, le samedi 30 juin 1984, de la Tour qui devient la « Maison de Pays » et accueille l'Ecomusée dans ses murs, mais également le Syndicat d'Initiative durant l'été. Les travaux qui ont débuté en 1979 se terminent en 1987. L'ensemble avec ses annexes (bureau, accueil, salles d'expositions temporaires et permanentes) ne sera totalement achevé qu'en 1992. Le musée est fermé au public depuis 2011. Un transfert de collections de l'association vers la commune de Montfort a été validé par la Haut Conseil des Musées de France en 2012.
