Les collections du musée proviennent essentiellement d'un travail de collecte initié par le Groupe de Recherches Historiques de Cours (69) à partir des années 1980, relayé par l'association Patrimoines Haut-Beaujolais après 1994, dans un contexte de transformation rapide des activités économiques des Monts du Beaujolais (déclin du textile des vallées du Reins et de la Trambouze). L'écomusée du Haut-Beaujolais a rouvert en septembre 2025 après d'importants travaux de réhabilitation réalisés par la Communauté d'agglomération de l'Ouest Rhodanien, propriétaire des lieux et des collections Musées de France.
