L'écomusée de la Bresse bourguignonne a été créé en 1981. Il a pour siège le château départemental de Pierre-de-Bresse, propriété du Département de Saône-et-Loire. Géré par une association de loi 1901 reconnue d'utilité publique, l’écomusée fédère un réseau de huit antennes thématiques ainsi que trois Musées de France municipaux associés qui relèvent de sa gestion scientifique. Sa vocation de conservation et de valorisation des patrimoines culturel et naturel propres à son territoire d'étude s'exprime à travers la diversité de ses collections et leur répartition sur l'ensemble de la Bresse bourguignonne. Sa collection compte aujourd’hui plus de 30.000 biens. Plusieurs grands domaines sont identifiés : l’agriculture, l’artisanat, l’architecture, le mobilier, la vie domestique, le costume, les arts et la production locale et régionale. Ces collections, au-delà de leur existence physique, sont les témoins d’un patrimoine immatériel fait de gestes, savoir-faire, coutumes et parlers qui contribuent à l’identité du territoire.
